Congrats theflutist94!
And Spark GOOD LUCK!!!

It can't be easy to play in front of all those judges. You are all a great encouragement to others! Keep up the excellent work and I am sure in time I will be asking for all of your autographs!

Spark, do you know how many people you have to compete against off hand?

Great job InstrumentCrazy! That's awesome. Keep that same energy in the next auditions.

Kate, I live in a small state. This is actually my first time trying out for all-states, as I am not a very serious flute student, so I'm not sure how many ppl I have to compete against. lol. But when I want to be competitive, I can. :P I do know that flute is the most competitive section of the regionals/all-states. There has to be about 100 or more flutists there. I supposed it will not be rough as Texas or NY though.

So how does it work with the regionals and All-State, specifically in Texas?

In Iowa, we have auditions for All-State on one day, and one day only. You are assigned two etudes (usually one slow, one fast.. usually one in a flat key and one with sharps) and you pick a solo that is about a minute in length. You also have to play three scales. Two are chosen randomly, you pick the third, and chromatic.

There are 6 audition centers around the state. For flutes, 5 are picked from each center with the top person being assigned the orchestra spot. After everyone at your center goes (approx. 40-45 flutes), recalls are posted in the afternoon. For flutes they generally recall 10 people in which they play another portion of the etude, probably another scale and chromatic, then select the final 5.

Its a long day, but still a one day process.

Then I know Texas' solo ensemble is pretty different too. Iowa only has State Solo Ensemble on one day in spring, you don't have to qualify to go to state or anything.. we don't have regional type things there either.

Hey InstrumentCrazy, I'm not really sure of these "divisions" you talk about. I don't live in SC, . It's just separated btwn middle school and high school, within each regionals and all-states. I am 2nd in regionals, which makes me happy b/c I know many fellow flutists in the same studio who are incredibly serious w/ their future career. What piece did you guys have to play?

Oh well in that case, I would be in the senior section...I have one more year to go.

By Voxman? Is that a Rubank piece?
