An mp3 of Fantasia No 5 is now posted under my profile. I think it could use a little more speed, but otherwise, not bad. I seem to have gotten over my intonation paranoia, and am now practicing longtones and trying to support the low register notes so they don't go too flat. I'm still struggling with the high register - it's probably way sharp, but I haven't really checked lately. Enjoy! Constructive criticism is welcome...

Yes. You are displaying a good understanding of this piece. Some little issues here and thee but you are also minding your tone well on all of your pitches. As you can see, there is much to be learned from these Fantasias.

Fantasia No 6 is now posted (apparently twice, but they should be the same version). As usual, there are some issues, but I think a fair attempt. I think low register intonation is still a challenge for me.

Fantasia's 7 and 8 are now posted, or should be shortly. Number 8 is a reasonable effort. Number 7 gave me some trouble! I'm struggling with the rhythm in the first movement - the dotted-eight/sixteenth combination. I seem to be playing them with more of a triplet rhythm. Of course once I noticed that, I tried really hard to get the rhythm right and the quality of the sound and intonation deteriorated. I owe this one another attempt, but I'm also not getting any younter . I opted to move on, and I'll go back to it in time.

One other interesting note - Number 7 refused to upload. I think it may have been too big of a file. I re-converted it at a bit rate of 192 which uploaded fine.

Hi Jim. I commend your courage in posting your playing for every one to here.

These Telemann pieces do not have to be played precisely the timing as written. You can add here in there your own style to them. Other wise they have the effect of sounding too perfect, almost computer generated. I hope you understand what I am trying to get at. Have a listen to some recordings by other pro flutists. Nina Perlove has some of them up on youtube that are a good demonstration. Think of them more as if you are singing them through your flute. You want them lyrical, expressive, unique. A sense of Rubato. Expression is the key to them, don't just play the notes written on the page. Have fun with them and be free with it.

Thanks so much for your comment, I take it as quite a complement! I find these pieces technically challenging and aim to get through them cleanly. As in everything else, there is a balance between technique and expression. I find that when I'm trying to record them, the priority goes to technique. At other times, I feel like I am playing them much nicer, but bobble up the notes once in a while. I completely understand your point and agree.

Ok, working on number 11. There is a passage a few measures from the end that alternates between low D, E, F and middle D. Would one use an alternate fingering for this passage? It is quite awkward to play. It occurred to me that the middle D could be played with the LH1 down. Any suggestions?

No 11 is up, and No 12 is pending approval. I hope these have been fun or useful. Posting them has given me motivation to get through them all. Thanks for listening and also for the comments.

I'm not sure what's next. Possibly some Handel Sonatas, although they would be better with the accompaniment. I also have some Telemann Canonic Sonatas which I might try by playing both parts. Not sure how that would work out.
