I have a Gemeinhardt student flute. 2sp. I would like a full sized flute and maybe even a wooden one.

Your Gemeinhardt 2SP student flute IS a full size flute already. And if you are referring to the one extra key (the B footjoint) to make it a "full size flute" than what do you think some of the best professionals play on that have a C footjoint?

Have a vintage (1972) Haynes with a 14K Williams headjoint.

Have a 14K Brannen (with silver mechanism but 14K rings and toneholes) on order.

I take a Gemeinhardt 3KSB camping.

Received my new Brannen today. IMO it is a fabulous flute, very responsive and allows many tone colors. Great scale too. Puts my Haynes to shame. But still need to learn to tame the beast.

Keeping the Haynes for Chamber Music performances.

Will use the Brannen for my orchestral playing.

I bought my flute on ebay when I typed in student, but you say I have a full sized! I have to research this. (I would like the B foot joint.)

Yes, a student flute is a regular full size flute. I have never really heard anyone refer to it that way though. Just because it doesn't have a B footjoint doesn't mean it isn't full size. Why do you want a B footjoint if you are still new at the flute? You wouldn't even be playing any repertoire until *maybe* late high school and college. It is a money waste just to have for looks.

No need to get so defensive about it!!! I was only stating what the norm was. I don't know too many HS students that need a B foot. There are many professionals that don't even have one. I still think it is more of a fashion statement on many kids part. I am not implying that it is particularly this case for all or you. If you want one, then get one with your "full size" flute. I shouldn't have made the assumption that you were a beginning because of the flute that you have and the fact that you didn't know that you had a standard flute. I guess I just assumed that most people would know that if they had been playing for at least a year. My apologies.

beginning = Beginner

Come to think of it, I think I want a B flat footjoint so I could have TWO extra notes. It would so look cool too!!!

Or you could get a Convertible footjoint from Brannen. A friend of mine has one, he likes the responsiveness of a C foot, but uses the B foot part when he plays one of those 142 pieces I posted the link to.

There is a picture of a Convertible Footjoint here:

True, you could get this one by Brannen, but I am willing to bet that the average young person (as well as many adults) do not have that kind of money to spend on one as they are very expensive. It is a great concept though. I own both a C and B foot.

Congrats on your new Brannen. I would so love to get a gold flute because I think they are so pretty, but I have always preferred the sound of silver. It would be wasted on me anyway Did you get the engraving or chasing done on the keys? I have always loved that special touch. I have an engraved crown and lip plate but the keys are so elegant to have done.

I have seen the hand engraving on flutes (a friend of mine has this and it is absolutely stunning), but for me, I decided against it. How do I explain this? I think of an instrument as a tool to make music, and when I want to look at something beautiful, I buy diamonds instead

Regarding the different tonal qualities of headjoints/flutes. I kept my Haynes headjoint for a reason as there are times that it is better suited for what I'm playing, e.g. several seasons ago we performed seletions from Puccini's La Boheme and the tone from my silver HJ better matched the vocalists. Most other times I play my 14K headjoint because I get a darker/warmer tone needed for some of the solos I play.

That is a good point. I am not much into diamonds or jewelry but I view the flute as not only a tool to make music, but a work of art. Just a plain old silver flute is pretty in itself. If I were to have jewels I want them on my flute. No one would probably see them but me, but hey, that is what counts! Besides, I think gemstones are far more beautiful on my flute than on me. Okay... sorry for getting off the subject
