Hi there,
I've been asked to play a concerto but with a string orchestra.
I can't seem to find much about for flute and strings so I was wondering if anyone could help?

So far I've found the Malcolm Arnold and Gordon Jacob- the latter I am considering, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, does anyone know of any arrangements out there- e.g. i would love to do the Chaminade, but is there an arrangement for strings about, given it is such a well loved piece.
Ideally, I would love to do something in the french early 20th century style.

Please help??

String orchestra? Go for broke by going for Baroque! Most solo wind concerti of the Baroque period are for string orchestra -- with continuo if you can find good keyboard and cello/bassoon players. If this is a school orchestra, however, they might not be accustomed to playing Baroque music.

Composers to choose from include J.S. Bach, Telemann, Loeillet, Sammartini, Quantz, Tartini, and so on.

I could- like we've got a great continuo going on.
Yes it's a school orchesra, but it's a goodun. This piece will be with the chamber orchestra who are great with baroque stuff... We're already playing one of bach's overtures though- with the famous badinerie- though so hoping to go for something a bit later....

I just don't know :S

For more modern, non-baroque literature, you might also consider some flute/orchestra works other than a concerto. For example:

Franz Doppler - Hungarian Pastoral Fantasie
John Rutter - Suite Antique

Both of those are very nice, challenging, fun to play, and are audience pleasers.

esonata

you could go with the Martin ballade, if you're up for it. Such a beautiful, intense piece written for flute and string orchestra.

I love martin's ballade- but i've played it a lot recently... I guess it's always an option though- thanks.

Back to musicman quickly- do you know if there is an arrangement for string orchestra?

thankyou all...

Rutter's Suite Antique is scored for strings and harpsicord. The parts are available for rent from Oxford:

http://www.us.oup.com/us/corporate/publishingprograms/music/sheet_music/composers/rutter/catalog.instrumental/?view=usa

The orchestra parts for the Doppler should be available, but I don't know who the publisher is and whether it would be a sale or rental. I'll put out a few inquiries to see what I can find...

The Doppler is for sale and available from Kalmus:

And:

Both also include a copy of the solo flute part, but conductor's score is separate.

Martin Ballade is rental only - must request price quote:

The Rutter is more of a chamber work for only strings and harpsichord. A piano could be used if a harpsichord is not available.

one question important to consider is the quality of the orchestra you are playing with...
