It was listed twice -- first with a starting bid of $5499, and then a second time with a starting bid of $3999. There didn't seem to be a reserve price. The flute seems to be real, from 1950, with the unusual (for Powell) configuration of C-foot, closed holes, and offset G.

What could the reasons be for no bids at all?

Some probable reasons:

1 - Made in 1950, it's pre-Cooper scale.
2 - Closed hole
3 - C foot
4 - Y-style key arms instead of pointed-style french arms

Today, right or wrong, most flutists in the U.S. are sold on the idea that they want/need a modern scale flute, with open holes, a B foot, and pointed key arms. They are convinced (again right or wrong) that a flute lacking those features is not a professional-level flute, ergo: no bid...

What was the "earlier" Powell scale (i.e., pre-Cooper)? And was there more than one Powell scale before the Cooper adjustments?

Prior to the Cooper scale (and the Bennett variation), most flutes were made to Theobald Boehm's scale (schema) which he defined in his book "The Flute and Flute Playing" (Search Google Books - You can read it online). I assume that Powell also followed Boehm's scale or similar at that time.

Also, in Google Books, you can read excerpts of Ardal Powell's book "The Flute":

musicman is correct, I have a Haynes from 1951, c-foot, open hole, and I got it for a very very good price, and it is a great flute
