I need help on understanding how to play a section of Fantasia on Carmen (Prelude) arranged by Simon Hunt.

At measure (57) marked "tutta forza". I understand it probably means something like playing at highest volume or so, but, does it apply to the full measure, the first note only or everything that comes after this mark (until the next expression mark? Or something else?

I could ask my teacher next Monday but until then, I would like to practise it correctly.

Tutta forza - Full power, as loud as possible

Any dynamic marking applies to everything you see/play until the next dynamic marking is indicated.

So if "tutta forza" on the first note in the measure is followed by another dynamic marking for the second note, then the "tutta forza" applies only to the first note. If there is no intervening marking, it applies to everything up to the next marking.

It is a little bit confusing in the score I have; this expression mark appears at measure 57; the next one is a crescendo sign at meas. 62 only and then a "mf" at meas. 65.

So, according to that definition, I should play a crescendo from an already full volume.

I asked my choir director today and he said that it can also mean a character or style, such as "martial" or similar.

I will ask my teacher next Monday and post her opinion.

Out of curiosity, you could listen to some recordings. They might not use the same score, but you can hear what the section might sound like.

It could be a mistake when writing down the score.
