I am a freshman in high school and for my final this semester in band I have to play Prokofiev Sonata Op. 94 IV Allegro con brio, or at least to measure 35 of it. I am having a good deal of trouble with the runs in the second part of this, mainly with not being able to play the notes. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to overcome this? It is being tested next week so I have all of Thanksgiving Break to perfect it.

Sorry but, could you be more specific?

When I try to play the runs i cannot blow through the notes. my lips buzz instead and I think this is because I run out of air or do not have the strength to push the air.

Firstly,
I think that this music is a bit bizarre to use this as a requirement for H.S. band.
Secondly,
The opening (Aside from the 4th beat of the first full measure) Is just about the easiest section of this movement. If your lips are buzzing or you are running out of air or sound, your embouchure may not be properly developed enough. Trying to get this piece in 3 or 4 days, isn't going to develop your embouchure properly.

The proper way to practice this is with a flute teacher who understands how to develop a student's abilities in tone and technique. So, you should go slowly, working on your tone, dynamics, articulation and inflections throughout the audition section. Then gradually build up the tempo.

once again, listen to Bilbo and his wisdom..You will not solve this problem, a common one, by practicing this sonata, you need to address the issue away from the piece by practicing scales and arpeggios first slurred and very relaxed, and work with a competent teacher
