cflautist I could have sworn that Rampal played on a Louis Lot Flute :x

He had a Louis Lot, but also performed on a Haynes. His face was all over their promotional material when he was alive. He was also included in a video that I have of the Haynes factory.

I bought a used Mateki last year, they also make nice flutes. If I was looking for a new flute with a budget of yours, I would try the Guo flutes. I have read great reviews from users of them and the latest model " New Voice" flutes are only $1250.

Another brand to consider, since budget may be an issue, is the DiZhao flutes.
It's worth though try playing before buying.

In the end, I have decided that I am going to buy a used Muramatsu EX. It played great and the price is very good. Its closed holes with split E and offset G. I think it is a great flute. Additionally, many of my friends have told me that it is a great flute and a great purchase. Thank you guys for all the recommendations.

Hello. My name is Paul. I have played the flute since 4th grade and am now almost in high school and still play it. one thing i have learned is a flute can last a lifetime if you take proper care of it. For your new flute, i recommend an Armstrong flute. They are cheap but very good. They're $400-500. Also, dont fall for any "bargain" or "super sale flutes" from music shops or websites like e-bay.com becuase those flutes are usually made with poor craftsmanship and will not last you a very long time. One of my friends bought a 200 dollar one and i bought a 400 dollar one. He was playing it one day, and he dropped it and it literally shattered into a million pieces. He had to get a new one. Mine fell once and NOTHING AT ALL happened to it becuase it was an ARMSTRONG. SO BUY AN ARMSTRONG FLUTE!!!!!!

I'm sorry to sound kind of arrogant or anything like that, but I don't think that any armstrong is in the category of a professional flute. Honestly I would say that Armstrong would fall into the student group. No offense.

I agree. I play on an Armstrong, and I love it to death. But, I wouldn't call it a professional horn.

I wish I would of seen this when you first posted this. I got out of high school and I have a step up flute I've been trying to sell it's in great condition and now I'm really trying sell it because I need the money because I'm moving and my hubby isn't here to help me think of more ways to save money because he's deployed so if you know anyone interested let me know or if you have ideas on how I can sell it let me know that too! thanks

I made exactly the same change, from a student (40 year old, may I mention) Gemeinhardt. I chose a Sonare. These have a much clearer high range and much more dynamic control.

my opinion (I have sonare head too):
correct, sonare headjoint gives you more overtones(upper partials), because its over-cut and under-cut are all square-shaped, also its lip plate and drop-off plate are very steep. You may feel it sounded very clear and projective and easy to go up high registers. BUT it's not pure and not sweet! It's hard to get pure tone and lesser over-tones.

They take commission, but it is a lot easier to leave the selling up to someone who can advertise the flute for you and find a buyer. Just a thought.
