hello, my name is kimberly and i have nothing to do...
i have been practicing my solos and all of the scales and tone exersizes and such.. but i like to keep busy in music. i was recently in a few honor bands, and i was in new york for a while, but now that that is over i cant find much to do near california... does anyone have any suggestions?
anything a high schooler can enter wold be helpful to know of, thank you :D

Didn't you recently perform in an honors ensemble at Carnegie Hall? Was it a band or was it an orchestra?

You had a solo, so I'm sure you have a flute teacher, right? Does your flute teacher know of summer camps or institutes in California or anywhere else on the West Coast? If not, surely your flute teacher can put you in touch with people who do know about such things.

The National Flute Association website always has announcements about enrichment programs such as flute conventions, flute camps, flute competitions, and flute master classes.

If you're serious about your flute playing, maybe it's time to become active in the NFA or at least subscribe to its publications (including "Flutist Quarterly"). Then you can answer other people's questions rather than having to ask questions yourself!

Your teacher has an affiliation with Idyllwild. Have you been there for the summer music programs?

i have not had anything to do with idywild yet. and i have not been able to have my studies with sara since i have been back from new york, since my flute has been in repairs for a while. i am simply looking for any honor bands around that i can audition for, or any organizations that need a flute player

and yes, i am seriously looking to be a professional musician in the future.

oh and i was in an honors band in carnegie hall.

Don't know how full the class is right now but it is an intense week of flute study.

Summer Flute Course with Patricia Harper


Monterey, California, July 5-9, 2011


This is a residential course for flute players (age 17 and over), teachers, and serious amateurs interested in a focused week of flute study and ensemble opportunities. Selections from the standard repertory and pedagogical materials will be covered. Players at all levels of proficiency are encouraged to apply.

The class will be limited to nine participants. The goal of the course will be to provide a stimulating and challenging week of concentrated flute study for players who seek the opportunity to spend a focused period of time working on their playing and finding ways to improve it. Participants can expect to play daily.

A recital is planned for the final day. All participants will perform solo works and in ensembles in that concert.

The class's popularity has rested on its small size and on the personal attention given to each participant. The atmosphere is both enthusiastic and supportive. Adult amateurs, as well as freelance players and flute teachers, have been regular attendees to the classes. Mature high school students and college-age players have also found the programs rewarding.

Have you ever thought about going to the Interlochen Summer Camp? It is a amazing program, and has masterclass, ensemble, and private lesson oppurtunities all summer taught by world renowened teachers. It's very competitive, and very expensive {about 7k} but they offer scholorships that are even more competitive. Of course, if money is no object, it is easier to go. I won't be able to go this summer for family reasons, but I have my hopes set for 2012! If you want to see more info about the camp, click here:

The NCFC staff prides itself in its ability to provide a premium musical education in a fun, casual, and close-knit atmosphere. Our small enrollment allows hands-on involvement from the staff in all facets of student life throughout the week. Each year, students travel from all across the world to participate in the program, making our student body interesting and diverse.

Camp is held at Hidden Valley Music Seminars, located approximately 11 miles from downtown Carmel. Students are housed 3 or 4 to a room, in clean and functional dormitory-like rooms each equipped with one full bath. Basic linen service is provided. Three meals are served each day in the dining hall.

NCFC is open to serious flute students, ages 12 - 18. At least 2 years playing experience and enrollment in private lessons is required. Applicants should have an active interest in flute study. Private teachers may be contacted for referral. An audition tape is required with the application for admission and ensemble placement (see Guidelines for Recording, below). Returning students need not submit an audition tape, although returning students who did not attend in the previous year are required to submit a tape.
