Then call it laziness on my part.
I obviously know that it is Lafin, since those headjoints are being made at Brannen now.

Old Haynes headjoint has very good tone and character, but their old flute body is terrible in scales. Flute maestro Kudo still loves and uses his old Haynes headjoint and put on his Yamaha body. There are 2 old Haynes headjoints on sale on ebay today.

I have played a sterling silver Haynes since 1964 and was satisfied with it until I tried a Powell with a Sheridan headjoint earlier this year. It was much better than the Haynes but was not satisfied with it and finally settled on a Williams with a Williams headjoint. I tried several others before choosing the Williams. The Brannens, Powells and Burkharts were all great flutes but for me did not produce the sound that I was looking for and did not play as well. I guess when you get to that level of instrument, it boils down to a matter of personal preference.

Bayrat,

Could you please describe the differences between the Williams, Brannen, Powell and Burkhart mechanism/bodies that you tried?

I already had a Williams HJ (with my 1972 Haynes body) and considered having Mr. Williams make a new body last year, but at the time he was having some health issues, and he also would not put a Split-E on a flute with an Inline-G.

So I went with Brannen instead because I had tried my friend's flutes and I liked the Brögger Mekanik pinless mechanism (it had a very buttery feel to it). They made a flute body to fit my Williams HJ. Does Mr. Williams also make a flute with a pinless mechanism?

Also, does anyone know why Haynes seems to have fallen out of favor recently? Thirty to forty years ago, they were on par with Powell. Is it because the late Mr. Fuggetta sold the company to Eastman Winds (a Chinese company)? I've noticed that used Haynes flutes don't fetch what used Powell flutes do on the resale market which is why I'm asking. But I've also heard that the new artistic director is trying to turn the company around with a new lineup of flutes.

Cflutist, based on my masterclasses with many masters, James Galway said he had old Haynes and its scale was a torment and he had to use his lips to adjust all the time. Rampal's best student Maestro Shingenori Kudo of Paris Conservatorie told us the same thing, but he said Haynes headjoint are so good to blow, that's why he used Haynes headjoint in Yamaha body(C-foot~you know Rampal used C-foot too).

For Brannen, I heard from some people that its body is great, but headjoint not so great, is that true? But recently they asked Lafin to help them make headjoints?

<Added>

But some of my friends said new Lafin heads are not as great as before...

<Added>

I heard the same rumour that Haynes has been acquired by a chinese company and then they made Amadues for china market?

<Added>

nowdays all the manufacturers don't make good headjoints as good as before, sigh, e.g. the old Muramatsu, old Haynes, old Powell and old Lafin are great heads. Seems all of their headjoint makers are either old or dead by now. It's best to buy old headjoints from ebay.

<Added>

Cflutist, it's a small world, my uncle repaired your friend's Brannen recently.

cflutist, I can't answer your question about whether or not David Williams makes a pinless flute. The other flutes were in both silver and gold. I don't think any of them had a pinless mechanism. The actions on all was good, although the action on the used Powell was not as tight as the new Powells or the others. None of them sounded as good as the Williams when I was playing them. That is not just me saying that but everyone who has heard me play the Williams when compared to the Powell, my old Haynes or the other new flutes that I tried.

My understanding is that the owner of Haynes is Chinese, the flutes are made in China and are then tuned by the owner in Boston; and that he is making a quality product. I did not have an opportunity to try a new Haynes.

And the other thing I really like about my Williams flute is that it is so in tune up and down the scale and gives a warm rich tone in all 3 octaves.

And, the Williams flute has all of the available options. It is truly a joy to play.

Bayrat,

the lower priced Haynes are made in China, the handmade flutes are still made in Boston.

As to the scale of the instruments being hard to play in tune, most freelancers, soloists, etc here in the NY area have old Haynes/Powell traditional scale and play in tune with no problems.

Patrick, I still have my Old Haynes, made in 1964, and have no problem playing in tune. The modern scale of the newer model flutes is better in tune than the Boehm scale. I still play my Hanyes and my old friend still delivers.

I would recommend Yamaha. After that Pearl Quantz is good, especially in terms of the price.

Personally, I love Powell and Trevor James, but this is very subjective. I know people who adore Pearl, but I'd rather run it over with my car. When I was looking for my flute, I was suggested to look at Sonare, and i hated it. In my opinion, you shouldn't take other people's opinions . Try several at a store and pick your favorite

I love Miyazawa flutes. Everything about them just works for me. If I had the money, I'd definitely grab one. I also really love Burkart, Brannen, and Arista.
I play a Pearl 765, which knocks most of the other flutes I've played in the intermediate range out of the water. I couldn't stand the Amadeus flute.. It played worse than the Yamaha I had tried out, and I can't stand those either.
