I only have direct experience with Fluteworld in USA and Allflutesplus in London. I bought my intermediate Yamaha in Fluteworld, got a good price and everything went fine. My Nagahara HJ in London, but that time I went there personally and tried different models for a few hours.

Buying a full professional flute maybe quite another matter, I cannot imagine buying one without careful and personal testing the model you chose or several brands/models if you are still undecided.

Please note ah some brands like Nagahara sell directly from factory and have no distributors in USA, (as far as I know but they do in Europe). You do not mention where you are in your profile so I suppose you are probably in USA.

For USA residents Fluteworld has the possibility to send instruments on trial, but I am not sure if they also do this with Pro flutes because of the values involved.

OOPS ah = that

The only shop that I have used is flute world. They actually send you flutes to try out before you choose!

You might also check out J.L. Smith and Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company. They both sell many "professional" flute brands. I did my headjoint trials with Carolyn back in 2006. She sent me 3 different ones to try which I secured with a "hold" on my credit card.

I would have thought that even if you try a brand X model Y and like it that individual specimins would be different. i.e. I would have thought that not only must you try the make and model of instrument, that you would want to try the specific specimin that you wish to buy. Just a thought.

If you can, go in person! You give your price range, some places will pull out dozens of flutes for you to try and you leave with the BEST flute your money can buy.

http://www.flutacious.com (Los Angeles)
http://www.flutes4sale.com (New York)
http://www.flute4u.com (Midwest)
http://www.fluteworld.com

And flute makers may list local dealers on their websites.

I second piko. If you are going to invest in a professional flute, both in terms of purchase price and time in attaining proficiency at your craft, spend the few hundered dollars to go to a store that sells what you think you are looking for. Try and compare several different makes and models. It may take more than one trip. Be patient, you will not regret the effort.

Weissman Music and Co. so far for me have been fab.

I live in a state where it is sad for me to say that the best instrument I was able to get my hands on in person are the Haynes Q1 and Q2 (as in the only "pro" flute). When asking about the head joins the sales guy read me the stuff from the book...I could have done that....I want an experienced player who touches these flutes daily to give me their thoughts and help me in this BIG decision....

So...with that said I saw that Weissman seems to have a great rep and saw others suggesting them. Gave them a call, spent almost an hour on the phone talking about what I am looking for, what I would like, they were very good about helping me stay in my budget and not giving me the option of something I would fall in love with to only then not be able to afford....(looking around the 4K to 4.5K mark).

Long story short...much to my happy surprise, they are sending me three, yes three, flutes to try that we think maybe a good fit. So far, very impressed.
