I'm new to 8notes - I need a little advice, and this seemed like a really good place to come.

I'm browsing repertoire to study. Obviously, there are some standards that I will be studying (Bach sonatas, Mozart concertos, French pieces (e.g., Chaminade, Faure), etc., but I'd like to study different, uncommon/underperformed pieces as well. For example, maybe music from other cultures, less common composers, etc.

So...what are some pieces that fall under this category? Thanks so much for your responses!

It's funny that just as I read your comment, a Jethro Tull song came on to my Pandora.

As for the original question, you might consider learning "Canzone" by Samuel Barber (it wasn't actually written for flute, but as a duet part of flute duet, but it can serve as a solo). I've also heard of a Copland flute solo, though I've never played it. I'm not totally sure how uncommon the pieces you are looking for are, but both of these are enjoyable to play. If you haven't played the Handel and Bach sonatas, I would suggest them also- not as difficult as a lot of the flute repertoire, but sight-reading these, preferably with an accompanist, is lovely.

It is hard to answer your question because if a piece was worth playing and was known to anyone then it would be soon popular. There is a site that specialises in making available music that is now out of copyright and if you search it, then it is possible that you would come accross a forgotten gem. I am not sure if I can just put URLs on this site, so I will suggest some words to put in your favorite search engine and I am sure you will get something :- IMSLP and SCORSER.

Free-scores.com (a french music site) also features free arrangements and original scores of many public domain pieces. They have a considerable flute solo (with or without continuo) so that browsing might turn up some decent results.

I did a piece in europe recently and recorded it in France for a new CD, its a series of south american dance pieces for flute/harpsichord by a canadian composer named Darlow, the piece went over really well in concert (2 in usa on tour and 1 concert in France) so we added it to the CD...I think it worked because we inserted it into the program around well known sonatas for flute/harpsichord be well know composers
