I am currently a high school senior with an upcoming audition for Southern Arkansas University's marching band. I need to have one fast and one slow piece to audition with. I have my fast piece. I just need help with finding my slow one. I've been in band since sixth grade so I guess I would consider myself intermiediate/ advanced. :] I would like a piece that is fairly easy to learn in a short amount of time but sounds impressive. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :] Thanks!

any slow movement of a Bach or Handel sonata will show a great deal about your playing..or the slow movements of the Mozart Concerti

The partita is an incredibly beautiful piece, but that movement especially can be very tiring to play and to listen to: it's slow and repetitive enough that, unless you do some major rhythmic/dynamic fluctuation, it could become boring to listen to. Most baroque adagio or largos lack the many repeats and the tiring quality of the Sarabande; I particularly like the first movement from Handel's First (a minor) Sonata. It's your choice, but make sure to pick a piece that lets you demonstrate your tone at all ranges and dynamics of your playing. You could also consider a modern piece like the slow movement from the Poulenc or Faure's Fantasie; they're very good at that.

boring to listen to??? any great music by JS Bach is only "boring" if the performer is lazy and has no imagination, much the way bad karaoke singers massacre beautiful songs...I have judged competitions before and I would rather here each contestant do this "boring" piece to show how musical they really are.

BWV 1013 Sarabande is far from boring but that is another story.
Some bands don't give you a choice and have a list of audition pieces.

If you choose that Bach piece from the A minor Solo PartitaBWV 1013, then you may want to consider learning the Allemande and the Sarabande movements. (One fast/One slow piece.) Don't worry about being bored.....they will stop you when THEY get bored. ;-)
Work on your sharp scales (read: A major) more and especially your 2 octave chromatic scale so that you don't get lost in the middle and finish on a different note than the one that you started on.

The band appears typical for a State institution. (...consists of members from all university majors. ). and don't worry about it....they want you to participate in their marching band.

I'm sorry if it seemed that I meant that the partita's Sarabande was boring. Bach was an innovator, reshaping perceptions of music and adding great complexity to what already existed. Of course, every one of pieces is creative and beautiful enough to play over and over, and I certainly did not mean to suggest that this Sarabande should not be played for an audition. Rather, I feel that the repetition incorporated into the this movement could use up valuable time (3-4 minutes, depending on what tempo you play it at and the creative liberties you take) of your audition. The Sarabande, with its haunting melody, demonstrates the tone and interpretation skills of the player (and a couple other things, depending on how you play it), but more than this is necessary for a successful audition. I did not mean to imply that the Sarabande could not be used; only that it would take up audition time that you could be using to demonstrate other aspects of flute playing.

thanks for the apology...if I am adjudicating or listening to a student, I WANT to see how they play a really slow movement, ones measure of musicianship and artistry is better measured by what they are able to do with LESS notes...
