Hi,
James Galway posted a youtube video back in 2007, where he demonstrated 16 different flutes.
He played each, identifying them only as flute #1, flute #2, etc.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of which make and model those flutes were, in the order he played them?
There were 4 flutes I especially liked and I've often wondered what they were.....

I think this board is pretty much inactive judging by the amount of answered posts.

I saw that Galway video too. The list is right there on the video page under the video screen. Found out I really have a preference for Muramatsu flutes that I can never afford!

Now I'm wondering which flutes ranked in what order. That would help as a guide while shopping :-)

You were asking about cheap flutes, and if you searched in eBay, there are gazillions of flutes in a huge range of prices.

Thanks. I ended up just getting an Armstrong 104 off of Ebay to get me by for a time. At $45.00 I figured I can't go too wrong. Saved enough that I might even try to replace the pads on my 103. If I can get that done a new headjoint would get me the flute I need to get me through till I get something really special.

Shame this board is dead. Almost any flute question you Google ends up here for posts a few years old. Wonder what happened to everybody?

I believe that there was several reasons why the board has gone dead. Not the least of which was Galway's lack of participation and a rather big move by many people to facebook.

As to the flutes demonstration If I remember it was rather inconclusive. One of the real issues is that recorded music doesn't fully represent the actual acoustic experience. Another Issue is condition of the flutes and a third is Sir James' abilities to make all of them sound pretty good.

I dont do Facebook, so ------ ! But I suppose that's where everyone is, yes.

Of course music thru speakers is not the same as live. But I had no problem hearing the differences via youtube, and my fave's were Muramatsu.. that was all I cared about!

The Muramatsu flutes are fine instruments. Makes me wonder why Galway changed away from them.....

Well, the 45.00 flute didn't work out. The pads were shot so I sent it back for a refund. I did instead, bid on an Armstrong 303 that looked pretty nice. I kinda bid not expecting to win but I won it for under 170.00!. Looks to be pretty nice with a silver headloint and I played around with it for a little while. The pads are OK but will need replacing soon,(low b is really tough to get a note out of) The real kicker though is that I saw a headjoint for Armstrong flutes, also on Ebay, That was solid silver with a gold plated interior and a gold plated engraved lip plate with a different embouchure cut. They were only asking 125.00 which would have been a great price but I offered 100 and got it for that. So, for 270.00 I have me a pretty nice step up flute.

I've fooled around with flute for years, just playing by ear for my own enjoyment. I started with some Bundy or similar crap and couldn't pass up a bargain when I found my used Armstrong 103 for, I believe it was 50.00 back in the late 70's. I'm just now starting to teach myself but I have never gotten a sound anywhere near as nice as the sound I can get from this 303 with the step up headjoint. Ebay can realy come through sometimes!
