low notes

I`m learning the flute on my own,out of a book.
I haven`t had much problems so far, but playing the low D is a pain in the neck. The tone is awful.
Should I blow in, out of the hole. I know, I have to blow slowly, but for the rest it`s just mystery.
I can get a decent tone when I do only this note, but it always sounds messed up when I gradually go lower.
Any advice?

It`s a pain in the neck but I enjoy practising. I was talking about the lowest D (re) where you push 9 pads.
I think the problem is with me & the way I position the flute. Should the end of it be closer to my right shoulder or should it be away from it?
Thanx guys.
sorry i don`t know any tunes for you to play. I don`t have a musical background at all

it could very well be with your posture and how you are holding your flute. when u play make sure you are only on the front half of the chair if u sit. also your flute should be almost horizontal when you are playing. having good posture works wonders when you are playing an instrument.

For all low notes, you must loosen your throat, blow across, change your embouchure ever so slightly and use ALOT of air, just like with all the notes. NEVER use less air, even if it worked for other low notes above it. Just wait until you get a B-foot...

Try going down chromatically from g1 to d1. Also concentrate on keeping your embrochure the same and blow your air down, not across.
