Flutes usually aren`t used in Jazz. Although I have heard of some schools letting flutes in their Jazz band. The instruments that are used are saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion (usually a drumset). Hope this helps.

yeah,
i`m a freshmen, and i`m in the jazz band at my high school but no flutes allowed. not being mean, but i`d suggest learning sax or something. that`s my instruemtnt. if you sit first chair you even get solos. the bari sax is easier to play. it may look like it needs more wind, but not really. the mouthpiece is bigger so more air can get through. i hope you can find a jazz instrument you like too.

Right from the day I found out my middle school had a jazz band, I wanted to be in it, but my band teacher said "No flutes in jazz band"
In high school, my director said the same thing. I`d reccomend sax, because it will do less damage to your tone than a brass instrument, or you could be like me and join jazz choir
In addition, sax has very simmilar fingerings to flute, so it`s not that hard to learn.
