Flutter tonguing on the flute should not actually be done with the tongue. It is done by making part of the back of your throat vibrate. It`s kind of hard to explain without demonstrating, but it`s a little like gargling.

Thanks everyone.

I`ve been told that an alternate is somewhat like gargling, but it doesn`t sound the same to me. I`m not sure if it`t the fact I haven`t practiced the gargling technique much, or if it`s just plain different.

Thanks to everyone,

well, flutter tounging is a good way to get away with glisses: Play the bottom note of the gliss, then play the top. But flutter tongue the whole time. My band director still has not figured out why I`m "so good" at glisses. It`s kind of sad. But it`s a good way to cheat.

Glisses? I just play the first and last notes at the right time, and wiggle my fingers in between (when they`re too fast to really play). My band director likes taking things super fast. It`s funny, because everyone is so impressed

There are two ways to do it. One is with the tip of the tongue and yes, it`s like rrrrolling your r`s. I find this way useful for higher notes (above 3rd octave E or so), but it tends to mess with the tone as well as intonation and it`s harder to do on lower notes.

The other way is indeed with your uvula, that little thing that hangs down in the back of your throat. It is a bit like gargling, but not as far back in your throat. Check out Robert Dick`s website for some hints (and if I remember correctly, he`s got audible examples too!). This second way is great for flutter tonguing all the way down to B. It`s hard for some people to learn, but if you can get it at all, practice it like mad and you`ll be GREAT at flutter tonguing.
