Sorry about the corny title that rhymes... I just get carried away lol.
Ok, after reading all the replies on the Buffet flute topic, I just found it sad that we were having a debate on which brands are more famous than others.
I personally think that it depends on the player. I went in to buy my new flute thinking that I wanted to purchase a Gemeinhardt or Pearl flute. When I tried half of the Gemeinhardts and the only Pearl they had it was a ho-hum type feeling. The Pro Yamaha I tried played AWESOME but it was $2,200 a ways out of my price range.
I ended up buying an Emerson flute, and am very pleased I did so. I was very skeptical when playing it, thinking it was a waste of my time (because I had heard of it and never seen more than a couple people that owned one), but it was just the right flute for me.
I guess the moral of this story(er... if there is a moral) Is if you`re buying a new flute, try a large variety of the flutes the store has, try to ignore the brands for a moment and just listen for what you think is better.

I think that it depends on the player to a certain extent. I`ve been playing an Artley for 6 years. I figured that if I could get myself into first chair with that, then I could be picky about the brand. I`ve been successfull so far. I`m working on buying a new flute right now!
