The colour has absolutely NOTHING to do with quality. However the makers of high quality student and professional flutes do not make coloured ones. So treat them as junk until you have reliable evidence to the contrary.

Perhaps the truth hurts, but a buyer of a flute would have to be very stupid indeed to base his/her choice on the colour of the instrument.

There is a such thing as a colored flute??

like red? -_-`

ooook.... I`ve never seen one before... the only oddly colored instrument I`ve ever seen is a metallic navy blue alto sax...

and that probably had the tone quality of a Fisher Price toy... like $400

anyways... the only different colored flutes I can think of are ones that are different shades of silver. Like a Nickel flute will look darker than a sterling silver flute, and depending on what it is made out of will make a difference in the darkness/brightness of the tone.

And out of curiosity would the black flute you`re talking about be a wood flute? Because if that`s the case, then a wood flute will sound VERY different then a metal one, and it will be a bitch and a half to take care of.

Yes there are different colours. I`ve seen a pink piccolo on ebay for a start. I agree, likely to be junk.

Flutes come is all different colors. Black, Red, Purple, Blue, Green, whatever. My colored flute is red. It’s great for stage. When the stage lights hit my red flute it looks awesome.

As far has tone quality. I believe that any great flute player can make any flute sound awesome. I know that a great flute player like Herbie Mann or Rahsaan Roland Kirk could pick up any old flute and kick a**! Ya know.

I love my red flute on stage when playin’ some funky soul music. But maybe from what others say a colored flute isn’t for an orchestra set-up. It has been a long time since I’ve played in an orchestra.

My opinion is that it’s all about your style.

It`s obvious you have yet to meet the range in quality of flutes. YOur statement is simply not true.

The world`s greatest racing driver would not win ANY race, driving a Model T Ford, nor could his performance impress ANYBODY on the track.

Nor would a pole vault champion get much height with a bamboo pole, nor impress anybody, unless he had the ignorance to impress himself.

I write humbly from the experience of servicing and playing over 120 brands of flute. That is several hundred different models.

Yes you are right about that. And like a said before; It has been a long time since I’ve played in an orchestra. I could probably learn a lot from you Meme

Again this is just my opinion… I really feel that there is a magic that happens with someone who truly masters their flute (or any other instrument). I think that someone as great as Herbie Mann has some kind of magic that I’ve yet to touch.
