I`ve been playing flute for four years and piccolo for about three. I`m a freshman in high school and i`m the flute section leader in our Wind Orchestra(highest band in the school) which means i play piccolo. But that`s not the problem. i also play in the marching band but i play flute. There is another girl playing piccolo. My first idea was to challenge her but she has become a really good friend of mine and she always talks about how lucky she is that her time came to be able to play piccolo.. I saw another band at a football game and they had three piccolos. i thought that maybe i can play piccolo also. I march dot number two because i challenged everyone except her. That means i`m second chair but without the chair part. The problem is that my band director does not lile the idea much. I already told him that it can work perfectly. Some of the reasons why it will work to be a good thing for the band are: 1)Flutes play the melody at the beginning and flutes are not loud so they aren`t heard at all. 2) there is a piccolo player and three flutes in the band.(including me) you can just imagine. 3) The piccolo player has a big breathing problem because since the flutes can`t be heard, she tries to make up for it by taking everything up an octave and you how much air that takes. I know that piccolos get out of tune easily but Cindy(the piccolo player) already started practicing together. There are only some notes that are naturally out of tune. I`m gonna talk to my band director again and try to convince him. What i`m trying to ask is i need advice on what i should do and what should i ask him or tell him. Help plz. Thanx in advance.

Tell him, piccolos are the only thing that will get you heard. Honestly, if you want to be heard by other people in marching band, then you should play piccolo, espically if the other piccolo player is having trouble with her breathing. And, although piccolos can get out of tune, thats just going to happen, nothing too big about that. It would be best to have both of you play piccolo, but if only one of you can (sorry if you already said that in your story, I read through it pretty fast) then see if you can play it better then her. No matter how good of a friend she is, always try to make the band sound as good as possible. If she is truely your friend, she would be happy for you.

We are marching 6 piccolos this year but normally you should march 1 or any other odd number. Thats what I`ve been told anyway.
I know the feeling of not wanting to challenge a friend and I`d say do it anyway but if you really dont want to then keep talking to your band director. Maybe he`ll see reason. Lots of luck to you.

Today it turned out that all the marching flutes were broken so i had my piccolo with me and i asked him if i could play it and he said that i could and i only got out of tune during the balad. i`m gonna ask him today if i can make it temporarely. wish me luck.

good news people. After an hour of writing e-mails to him, he decided to let me play piccolo. I`m so happy yay. He told me the decision yesterday but i got home late from the football game. if anyone ever wants to chat or anything u know my e-mail. it`s on the blue letters. Bye and thanx again.
