The material is probably like most student flutes - silver plated nickel silver. Note that nickel silver contains no silver, and there are many grades of it.

Historically at least, Angel brand was rubbish.

Alright I tried starting a new topic for this but it doesn`t appear to have worked so maybe this will.
I have a flute by the brand name Pathfinder. It was made in China and it to is a rubbish brand based on my experience with it. Although I have already replaced it with an armstrong 103B, but would still like it repaired for sentimental reasons. The Pathfinder was a gift from my grandmother, whose health now seems to failing every day.
I`ve taken it places to get it repaired, but most repair technicians will not work on it because it is as they put it "too cheap"
Does anyone know anything about this brand or of anyone who will repair a too cheap flute?

A low quality flute needs better repairer skills than does a well made flute, because the technician typically has to correct a wide range of manufacturing faults, such as sloppy pivots, non-level tone holes, key cups no aligned correctly with key cups, point screws that jam when you tighten them, leaking tenons, etc, etc.

Any GOOD technician can do it, but the cost can be significantly more than what the flute would be worth after doing it, and sometimes more than it would to replace it with new low-grade flute.

If you are THAT passionate that you must pursue this venture, then track down a technician with excellent reputation - i.e. the skills to do it - and talk about not whether he/she would do it, but how much it COULD COST to do it.

I would certainly do it on that basis, but I will not do instruments outside my own country.

YOu must realise that a low grade instrument can be a can of worms to work on. Perhaps a part cannot be brought to reliable function unless it is bent to a new geometry, and when the technician does this, the metal breaks (which it would never do on a well made flute). Perhaps there is corrosion in pivots, and the technician has to drill out the pivot rod and make a new one - pretty time consuming stuff!

What is more likely is that a technician is just not prepared to tie himself to a quote when all these possibilities lurk in the instrument. So you need another arrangement other than a quote. Discuss other possibilities.

But to get sentimental about such a low grade instrument does seem rather foolish. Perhaps the money could be better spent, say in buying a decent 2nd hand basic instrument and putting it on `permanent` loan to kids who could not otherwise begin playing a flute like you did.

Thank you for the tip. I did replace it in April with a brand new Armstrong 103b. I guess it foolish to be so sentimental over the Pathfinder, I just kind of feel like since I`ve kept the flute it would be good to have it play a little bit. It doesn`t have to be perfect. In fact it never really was.
I`m glad that at least repairing it is somewhat possible. I really shouldn`t knock the Pathfinder too much. I did get four good years out of it and was ideal for teaching myself how to play on.
I just have hard feelings toward the Pathfinder because it came apart in the middle of a flute solo, and yes the audience was in hysterics.
