Hi, I bought a flute, but I`m not quite sure how I want to learn.
My friend told me to go to her brother`s flute teacher. She`s the wife of Zhiliang Yu (a pianist) if you`ve ever heard of him. She takes piano lessons from him and i think she`s really good, she`s only been playing for 1 year and it`s amazing.
On the other hand, it`d be so much more convenient for me to not go to someone`s house and learn by myself.
What are the pros and cons? For a tutor, it`d be a lot easier, but it`s so expensive...($30 for 45 mins) I live in NYC so that may have something to do with it, but wow...
Learning by myself, I`d feel more comfortable, but I don`t know if I`ll have the motivation to practice or not.
What do you guys think? How were your experiences from a tutor or if you self-taught youselves? Thanks.

If you get a good teacher, then that teacher should be able to give you enough to work on for quite a while before the next lesson, PROVIDING you do the interim teaching yourself, conscientiously applying everything the teacher has said. The vast bulk of what teachers tell students is repeating stuff they have said before, but which the student has not yet adequately put into practice. Therefore you should be able to arrange with a good teacher to give you a casual lesson, only once in a while, when you feel you have carried out ALL the principles the teacher has told you.
Of course this requires the discipline that most students don`t have. Most students need a teacher`s whip to apply what they have been taught.

I guess it depends on why you want to play... for self enjoyment or to play pieces with/for others.
My daughter self taught the 1st three Yamaha Band methods books in flute plus the Rubank through Intermediate before getting lessons (about 6 months).
The impetus for the lessons was because she wanted to audition for a band and needed to suddenly learn a Mozart piece. It took her quite some time to unlearn bad habits of technique, posture, fingerings and embouchure. In addition, we learned that with pieces, like the Mozart Concertos, the period required a different trill method than was taught in the beginner band books. You would not know special genre playing methods from reading the music alone.
Just some food for thought. Best Wishes.
