In a book from the 70`s called "The Avant-Garde Flute", they mention a technique to blow over the embrochure hole like you would a trumpet, to create a horrible sound from the flute. I can`t seem to figure out how to do this exactly. Any tips? Obviously, this would tend to wear down pads and such quickly on a silver flute so I`m sticking it to my simple system flute instead.
Also, they mention something called "whistle tones" that are harmonic high pitches produced with a steady, but very relaxed embrochure. I don`t have examples of how any of this stuff sounds, but am interested in using them for practice.
Thanks!

I read a book called "The Other Flute" when I was at uni. I think the author was Robert Dick (but I may have got that wrong). This book is full of extended technique.
As regards the buzzing, I did try it. No particular tips, just do what it says. It does tickle your lips though.
A dutch flautist (who`s name sadly escapes me) gave us a demo of all this stuff at uni. He did a workshop and had us playing up to the G off the official range. He did the most outrageous things with his flute, he had a kazoo welded to one of his headjoints. He also miked himself up and ran it though loads of effects pedals. Unbelievable results.
Good fun to play with, but not necessarily a high demand for this style of playing!
