I am trying to relearn the flute after 16 years. When you have a half note tied to a quarter note do you accent the quarter note or just count three beats. I am meaning when the notes are the same note. I just can`t remember how to play this. Thanks!!

I just recently had this pointed out by my band director during a clarinet lesson. If the tie is not connecting the note on opposite sides of a bar line then you do not accent the quarter note. But if it is a tie in the middle of two barlines and is the same not you have to articulate the quarter note. He pointed that out while we were running through some of our competition music. Hope that I helped.

ANY tie creates a single note. It is only written as two joined notes for clarity of reading. It does not have accents in the middle of it. <P>I suppose if a composer wanted an accent, it would be written in as a >, but I have never seen such a thing in the middle of a tie.
