Not unless you have a very cheap model. The wooden ones often have an embouchure hole the same size as the C flute preventing the need for a tighter embouchure. Also... beware the position of the trill keys... they`re placed further back so don`t get caught out. ..and there is no low C or C# key.

"Are open keyed flutes and piccolos hard to play?"

The piccolo question has been answered. Open-hole flutes take a bit of getting used... how much depends on how you held your closed-hole model (eg. placing your right thumb across the back of the tube rather than underneath it, will allow the fingers of your right hand to rest on the keys properly without being lop-sided).

An open-hole is useful for a more advanced player (Grade 7/8/9 ABRSM) or if you play modern jazz. You can get some strange harmonics and produce weird effects by half-covering the hole or just depressing the rim.

There are also certain features of the flute that will affect ease-of-play. The offset G being the obvious one. With an inline G it is harder to cover the hole and there is also increased risk of RSI in the left hand due to this. You can learn more about features like this on the Miyazawa website.
