i`m getting trouble in blowing my flute
i just can`t get my lips stick to the mouthpiece correctly
only airy sound comes out, and even worse, sometimes no sound comes out!
i`ve been playing it for 1 and a half year already
is this normal?
what`s wrong with me?

don`t worry, it takes awhile to get a good tone. after i played the flute for a year and a half my tone was airy too. just practice a lot, because if you don`t practice a lot you won`t get it. if you know anyone that plays the flute pretty well ask them to see if you`re doing anything wrong too. or it could be the flute!! if a spring is out of place sometimes notes won`t come out. and some flutes are just better than others.

First of all, try another mouth piece. That could be the problem. If you have a "rythym" flute then that is definatly the problem. see if you can make a sound on another flute and if you can u should probly just get a new mouth piece (or a new flute). My guess is if you`ve been playing for a year and a half and you cant make a sound its the flute, definatly not u. well, good luck w/ the band business!!! ~MacFlutey

i just had my new flute a few months ago! i think it`s definately the problem of the position of my lips because sometimes i got beautiful sounds by luck! is there anyway to make it easier to remember the right position?

Try making a dot of nailpolish on the headjoint and the body that line up when you`re in a place where the tone is good. Don`t worry, nail polish won`t hurt your flute, and if it`s just a small dot, nobody will notice.

have you tried using just the headjoint? practice your breath control just a few minutes everyday with just the headjoint and it`ll make a world of difference. also use a mirror to make sure you`re lined up with the embouchure hole and then keep your airstream steady while you roll the lip plate forward and back until you find the "sweet spot"
