Do you think if you get your clarinetout, play a little, and find you are intune for the throat notes but shrp for clarion register it is best to just pull out a little between the upper and lower joints?

I think I would try and work with my embochure and my breathing rather than pulling out...

I find that it`s better to tune the longer fingered notes - ie B over the break etc instead and vent the throat notes as the intonation on the throat notes is always going to be different to the rest of the instrument characteristically -on R13s, they`re often quite sharp. I find that on my instrument, putting down the entire right hand and 2nd and maybe 3rd finger of the left hand when playing throat A seems to bring it into tune (when B has been tuned perfectly or slightly sharp). Experiment with vent keys etc to bring in tune, slightly cover tone holes to flatten notes etc. This seems to work better than trying to tune open G or A first and is less problematic. But knowing where the whole instrument sits tuning wise is the best option so you know when you have to compensate for intonation issues.

Just a suggestion...

I think tuning depends on a few things:

1. embochure
2. age of clarinet
3. temp. in room you are playing in
4. Those playing around you.

All the people in my band class when they can`t get anything out or it doesn`t sound right they always take apart their clarinet even if it is because of their embochure

no what I find that you should if your throat tones are in tune then you should pull out alittle bit in the middle part of the clarinet and make sure your chin is flat and the clarinet is at a 45 degree angle if not then every thing will be flat but don`t tighten up so much in the upper register to force the higher notes out push your air stream alittle faster that is also why you are sharp.Good Luck.
