Hello all ^_^

First off, let me state my situation. I am the Field Commander of our band, also I was the section leader until a friend stepped up to par. I still work with the sectionals for our woodwinds, however.

The problem is that I have one clarinetist in specific who wont to ANYTHING! I tell her what to do, and even if it is a simple chromatic, she cant do it. This is her 2nd year playing too. She doesnt know any fingerings, and gets confused extremely easily. I have tried everything I can think of, one-on-one lessons, simple exercises, embaucher help, other peoples help, etc.
The other day my director came up to me and asked me if she got good grades, because she is so dumb....and that is no joke, lol. I am totally at a loss for what to do with her. I hate to admit it, but I have a feeling that band is not for her...maybe there is a way to get her to atleast a bassic level of understanding? I am not sure, but I know I am in a rut with her, thanks for all the help in advance ^_^

hi there. i am also a drum major/field Commander, im guessing they`re the same thing for the SOUTHLAKE CARROLL DRAGONS!!! O YEA!!!!! haha anyway, when dealing w/ a person like that, it is best to take them aside and help them individually. One-on-one is the best way to fix a problem such as the one u have.

Well, I`m not a drum major, but I`m the Junior section leader for the clarinets. When I come across this problem, I try to get them to like band. I show them how fun it can be. That`s usually enough to get them to improve. I`ve never had to teach them scales and stuff like that, because they already know it, they just didn`t care enough to try.

So, I guess you should try and have fun, show them how great band can be. Oh, yeah, sometimes when I meet someone like that, they don`t have many friends, so, try to be nice and be their friend.

Hope I helped you out!!

"I have tried everything I can "

Well obviously you haven`t tried EVERYTHING if she still can`t do what you mentioned!

Why don`t you just try and be patient and stop calling people dumb or stupid.

Yes omar, that quote proves she did not call the kid dumb, someone else did. And it`s true that someone else said that.

Would you like it in bright flashing neons next time?

For some, marching band is the opportunity to go out and kick someone`s rear every week. For some, it is a safety net. For some, it is merely a way to hang out with friends. By being a drum major, you likely fall into category one. You love band and push yourself for excellence. Remember though, not everyone joins band for the same reason. If she has only played a year or two, give her a break. She may be overwhealmed. Let people enjoy band for their own reasons.
