I think the point was that its not a contest to see who can play on the thickest reed. Different sizes work for people with different embouchures (sp) and lip muscles. There`s no badge of honor for playing on a size 5 reed and it won`t necessarily make you sound better.

Vandorens usually are a bit more expensive than Ricos. However, they really do sound great. A typical Vandoren reed is about a half size thicker than a Rico (A 2 1/2 Rico is about 2 Vandoren). If you have been playing for six months, consider trying a two and a half if two does not work or switching to a thicker brand.

if your clarinet sounds airy or bad mabey it is your clarinet and not the reed. to give you advice people at my high school use a strength 3 and the advanced people use a 3 1/2

Hey, Um, I`m in the seventh grade right now. I`m first chair in my band and have been playing since 2nd grade, about. But I`m using a size 2 1/2. My sound is fine (to me, at least, not to boast), but should I be using a bigger reed?? Help!
