I hae been playing for a couple of years now and can play a full range chromatic scale on my Bb clarinet is there any note higher than 4th octave aka reallyreallyreally high g?

yes, there is. i assume from fourth octave you mean the G above the one right above the staff. most say that the highest "legal" note on the clarinet is the fourth C. most good clarinet books and any online fingering chart can give you thr fingerings.

I play my chromatic scale up to upper altissimo D# which is 6 lines above the staff. So yes, there are lots of notes above that G. Most are false fingerings that give you the note you want...and many have dozens of fingerings to produce the right tone.

Shanna is right, the highest note in the clarinet is the super high G..... you finger it like this thumb,rk,1,1,top right pinky, and this key is optional.... the side key next to the a key, in other words the g# key......... jeez you play alot of instruments, and no, the 4th octave G is not the highest note. It may be the highest some-what decent sounding note.

the clarinet goes for at least another octave after the "legal" c (thumb and register key)
im just learning them and they sound like barely controlled squeeks, however they do exist, and you can go higher.
you dont need these notes very often, but they do exist

thats funny i've never heard anyone call that C the highest legal note!! besides i wouldn't agree with that point of view, i do ABRSM grade exams (that stands for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for those of you who didn't know) and those exams go right from grade 1 up to grade 8, I'm only taking my grade 4 this christmas and the range of notes I have to be able to play for that is up to a D above that, so the other grades would be even higher. so in answer to the first question asked, there are definitely notes higher than the G you are referring to.

yes, there are definately notes higher, and i do use them,
the reason we call them the thumb and register 'c' note the "higest legal note" is because after that you take off the left index finger, AND that is about the place where the notes are not really linear in fingering positions. ~ these notes also often have more than 3 fingerings to get the same note
thats my reasoning, please express your opinions on the new topic i am about to post

hi i dont know the first thing about playing a clarinet'im 50 yes 50 and the lads down the pub bet me i cant learn stranger-on-the-shore in a year.
im getting a Bb clarinet off e-bay in a few days for about £80...acker-bilk gets a great sound out of his...will the one im getting get the same sound'also i suffer with asma'but then some people do anything for charity..any help please...great site...steveo
