If it was Benny Goodman, then I'm pretty sure he was playing clarinet :-D

its called a growl. Saxes do it a lot in jazz and you literally make a growling noise in your mouth and it comes out sounding like that

but then again, Benny Goodman was also like the master of flutter tonguing, which is also a sort of grunt sound

I actually believe flutter tongue is played a lot faster though

Was it flutter tounge or a growl? Make up your mind!

There is two ways of playing the flutter tongue. The "real" one is the one, where you play d-r-r-r-r-r.... right behind the reed, and the other one (also called a growl) is produced in the back of your throat like h-r-r-r-r-r...

And since you haven't described what it sounds like, it's pretty hard to tell Try it out yourself perhaps

what how does it sound like, i think it's a gliss, thats where you play 3 notes at once, you have to loosen your embochure though

Well Alaro you're wrong about that. A gliss(ando) is were you play 1 note and bend/slide up to another note. You do it by playing the first note, then you play it lower(?) and lower and then you start moving your fingers up to the note you're supposed to end at. It's kind of hard at the beginning, but start with trying it from the E (the third octave) and play up to a G (also third octave). I think it's the easiest place to play it

I found an easy way to growl was hum and play at the same time, sounds like a growl, or its cool at least...

To do a glissando, you can use your tounge try hissing like a cat, notice you put your tongue againsts your bottom teeth, play high C and arch your tongue you can bend the note pretty far down, most Ive gotten is 5 notes, then again i heard that technique last week, I have better success with moving the tip of my tongue across the top of my mouth, I have a solo in my jazz concert on monday at school, im excited to use my Gliss =D
