I've just finished my first year exams and I've got to find some new repertoire. I'm not sure what to play, I've just finshed the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody and I still want to play some demanding repertoire but not the Mozart, Burgmuller, Weber, Poulenc, Stravinsky or Berg. Any ideas?

Hi. If you are into modern music at all, there is an excellent piece by an Israeli composer called Shulamit Ran (the composer that is not the piece!). The piece is 'For an Actor: Monologue for clarinet in A.' It is an excellent piece, written in twelve tone, and brilliant use of moder day techniques without losing the feel of the whole piece. if you are interested in contemporary music, let me know and I have a whole bunch of reccomendations I can dig out for you, with publishers etc.

I have the Nielson, it's too difficult really - I've just finishes doing the Tombe de Couperin by Arthur Benjamin which has loads of notes! I'll give the Muczynski Time Pieces, I like the Spanish Dances he wrote Thanks!

HAHAH...Nielsen?? Too Difficult??? NO WAY?! The only reason it is difficult really is because he writes it in "C Major/A minor" and then flats or sharps everything. It almost looks like he is writing in Cb Major/Ab minor with all the accidentals. Once you get past that...the piece really is brilliant and methodical. The only part that trips me up sometimes is the horrendous tonguing where the staccato 32nd notes are. BUT, for a runner up I definitely choose Muczynski! Don't expect it to be any easier than Nielsen, though...just shorter (he does the same thing with the key as Nielsen..only he loves sharps!).
