Im curious as to which you prefer to play, a wooden clarinet or a plastic one?

I'm looking to purchase one for myself and Im interested in a student or inter one for 300 or less if possible. So any ideas, brands, reccoemendations would be greatly appreciated.

Go with wood (grenadilla is the best). plastic ones feel wierd, are difficult to play, and have no sound

Really? Because I LOVE my plastic clarinet. It plays wonderfully. Better than a lot of wood clarinets that I know...I guess it depends on your playing ability and preference.

Wood is better.

Some plastic clarinets tend to have a quick response, which fools young players into thinking they have a good horn. They do not project the same as wood, nor have I found one with good intonation. I hope that helps!

PS Don't play your R13 in the rain.

I use a plastic yamaha, it sounds a lot better than the old plastic one I was using, some weird company. Plus it is painted to look like wood, and it sounds like wood too. You wouldn't know it is plastic. So I guess it really depends on who makes it.

I prefer my wooden one infinitly to my plastic one. The plastic one is an Artley student I use for marching band, and my wooden one is a Leblanc Opus II that I use for everything else. There's no comparison. I did a very bad thing and used my Opus outside for an evening concert, but I only did it *after* checking the humidity to see that it was close to inside norm.

It all depends on your preferance in playing. If you're looking to buy one, then try both and see which one you like. I personally think wood gives a much better sound.

Also, what are your uses for it? If you do marching of any sort, I wouldn't use a wood one. I do, but only because my parents wouldn't initially let me get two.

If you are looking for a less expensive clarinet, you have a few options. First, you could rent from a local music store. The rental fee near me is about 60 dollars for three months. But sometimes, then, the store will try to pressure you into buying it. You could also go to a store or ask around for used clarinets. Sometimes you can find nice ones. My current clarinet I got by trading in my plastic one and paying the balance, but the full price was about $250. It's a wood selmer with a Larry Combs mouthpiece, and it's served me well, but I'm upgrading. That's why you have to try them out a lot first- see how long it's going to last you. Min lasted about...three years.
