at my school sometimes i hear when i tell people that i play clarinet they always comment "clarinets are girly insturments" whats so wrong with a boy playing the clarinet i just love playing it

i don't think anything is wrong about a boy playing the clarinet because my friend Jose plays it and tells everyone the same thing!!!

i dont have a promblem with it but for me being a boy i just getting tired of hearing that its a girl insturment

At my school the ratio is about 50/50 male-female. Not a problem here.

its annoying that its being called a "girls instrument", but at least i can play it - the people who say that generally cant play anything themselves, and hum poorly, so it doesnt bother me that much... still, an annoying label

Don't even let that bother you. Keep practicing, and when you outplay them, they'll have nothing to say.

At least you didn't have a wiseguy trumpet section like I did. They kept saying "can't hear you, little black stick". All they did was talk about practice. Months later, they were pretty much at the same level.

Actually, the clarinet was one of Mozart's favorite instruments . I too, play clarinet and have gotten comments like that (well, played, I use it mainly for composing, but I sometimes play it for fun). I played back in middle school, and the sort of sad thing was, I was one of the top players.

If you are that upset about it, switch to Bass Clarinet, thats what I play and I love it!

I play bass clarinet probably because it sounds cool and all 7 clarinets at my school are girls.

Lol, we only have one male clarinet...and we really do think he is !*****!...I'm not descriminating or anything, !*****! people are cool, but there are rumors about this guy lol. Yeah, bass clarinet rules..I just bought some plastic reeds! And I can play like ten times louder! Its funny cause my director calls the bass clarinets the bass line. Although I like bass, I would much rather play Contrabass.

our clarinets are mostly girls. not exclusively though. it's the same with flutes- (everyone calls them man-flutes) theres just weird stereotypes. and girl trumpets/tubas/probably other stuff get comments. it's just the way people are. nobody makes fun of male clarinet players in the famous symphony orchestras.

consider this- guys who dance/are gymnists/things of that sort get made fun of in high school- but the guys in the olympics are just as amazing as the girls- sometimes better. high schoolers are immature.

and that is the moral of my post- high schoolers are immature.

Oh please, they need to get over that. It used to happen to me in my beginning year but after that, everyone just dropped the subject. If you watch those kind- of old public access specials you'll see that most times, all of the clarinet players are guys. This doesn't mean that it's a male instrument either. It's just an equal thing.

It's like the flute. I don't understand why everyone automatically assumes that all guys who play the flute are !*****!. Come on, some people need to grow up. Why does it matter so much? We’re all just people trying to express our love of music with instruments, lol. Wow I could’ve just said that we’re all musicians.

Two words....Benny Goodman! I know he was WAY before your time and mine, too, but he still totally jams! And, the attitude of the people you are talking about is just kid stuff. I know that doesn't help much right now, but trust me, when you're in college or after, the attitude you're getting from these people really won't matter. Basically, it just shows their ignorance of the instrument and music, in general.

Oh, and for the record, I play or have played Bb clarinet, Eb alto clarinet, violin, mandolin, piano and alto sax. I hope to one day add flute to that list. My husband plays alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax and has played bass clarinet and guitar. He is about to start learning how to play the cello. Anyone, regardless of gender, can play any instrument they want, as I'm sure many other people on this forum can attest to and can vividly illustrate for you.

in addition to the last responce, there's also Artit Shaw, so, with these 2 male clarinettists, we have bot "the king of swing" (goodman) and "King of the clarinet" (Shaw), which i think says a lot for male clarinettists
