i think s/he is asking why people use a crystal mpc.

and s/he is also stating that a clear mpc looks funny on a black clarinet.

in general, crystals mpcs provide certain tonal characteristics that hard rubber (ebonite) does not readily produce. such as a "crystal" clear tone and added projection. actually the tone is pretty nice - i've used one on and off for 25 yrs when i need projection - usually in jazz band settings when there is not a microphone for the saxes.

stereotypically a HR mpc will have a darker tone

of course, all mpcs vary to a certain degree - tip opening, etc and it could have facing issues and tonal characteristics vary too.

I think the cystal mpc looks pretty neat on a clarinet myself

They make CRYSTAL mouthpeices???!!! Holy phoo! How much will one of those run you?? That's amazing...

Ha ha, for a music major, I'm rather naive about the clarinet world. Haha.

Yeah I just looked them up after I posted that -- I'm putting that on my wishlist after I get a proffessional model clarinet.

See them on ebay sometimes.
I managed to pick up a pomarico Bb ruby mouthpiece.
Still would like to try one of their cystal jazz mouthpieces.

Just got one of these metal mouthpieces

for jazz ( joined the uni music society jazz band) and absolutely loving it. Great tone and quite loud.

Pomaricos are crap, in my opinion. I have a Selmer and love it very much. I use crystal (Selmer Crystal, 1 Facing) for soloing and rubber (Bay Artist) for ensemble work. A Selmer will run you around $100 if you get it at WWBW. But, keep in mind that the mouthpiece really depends on the player.

selmer doesn't always make their own products.
I probably should have said do selmer make their own crystal mouthpieces
or do they source them from someone else ?
