The other day i was listening to a clarinet solo on one of my friends cd`s and the soloists seemed to have a vibrato. Is there such a thing for clarinets? I thought is was only a sax, flute and oboe thing. Is it recomended to be developed? If so..how?

Yes, vibrato can be used on nay instrument. Some instruments are more popular with it than others (Oboe and Bassoon need it, as does Flute on a lesser scale- while the Clarinet`s tone is warm and does not need it nearly as much if any at all). It depends on your preference. Since it is much more controversial for us than flautists etc., it is not generally taught as a necessary tool. If you want to use it- it`s the same in singing, and any other instrument including brass.

It develops as you play. I doubt anyone can teach it to - even by example it would be hard, much less in words over the internet. Keep playing. As your sound matures you should realize it developing. Later down the road that may be either a good or bad thing......

The Clarinet is an amazing instrument. Without any technical effects it`s very nice to listen, but when you add the effects it can be really really interesting. I remember one time, during a jazz performance with a famous Jazz Saxophonist, he played several different instruments like Tenor sax, flute, bass clarinet, and many more. Anyways, getting to the point of the story, he GROWLED a bass clarinet!!! I was in awe and I still am not sure to this day how he did this. I`m sure if you checked on the internet it might have some lessons or tips on how to develop this technique.

growling a Bass Clarinet is just like growling a soprano clarient, or any other wouldwind, for that matter. :T

though, admittedly, it took me a little while of trying (over perhaps a collective hour of time) to be able to do it... it`s not too hard
