Hi everyone,

I am not a clarinetist by any means, I'm just a music ed major (main instrument: flute).

As part of my methods class for flute/clarinet/sax class last semester, I had to play the instrument obviously. Anyways, when I was playing it, I found that I developed an allergic reaction from the reeds that I was using (which were wood). This led me to believe I had clarinetist cheilitis.

So, my question is, what are good (but inexpensive) brands of reeds that are plastic that would help prevent the allergy?

WWBW.com has a pretty good selection of synthetic reeds for sax, and clarinet, you can buy one for each and they will last you months or longer (since they are not your primary instrument) I am not sure if tone is an issue for you, (they dont always sound the best) but they do work.

These are the cheapest ones I found for alto sax and Soprano (Bb) clarinet

I recommend Fibracell for saxes. They produce a better sound in my opinion. On clarinet it's harder to sound good using Fibracells. Legere is probably the best lower priced synthetic for clarinet.

Legere is the only synthetic reed I would recommend. As far as I'm concerned, they're the only ones worth paying for.
