Every talks about what "grade" they can play. What is that? Is it the same as a grade 2/3/4 solo? HOw can you tell the grade?

I think I can answer if you are Canadian. If you are in Canada, the "grades" that people are referring to are levels of exams taken from the Royal Conservatory Of Music. You sign up and take a perfomance exam where you play a few pieces and some technical stuff.

If you`re in Britain, we use ABRSM(Associated Board for the Royal Schools of Music) to take exams. You have to play two piano accompanied pieces and one unaccompanied study. Then you have to sight-read a short piece and answer questions about a piece of music that the examiner plays for example if it`s in a major or minor key, what dynamics were in it etc. You also have to play some scales. They mark you on each section and if you get 100 marks you pass.

Oh...I live in the US...do we use those scales? Thanks for the info!

well i have always been told that the grade of a particular piece of music is how difficult it is...although i could be wrong

Most grades in the USA go by how well you perform on a certain solo in front of an audience/judge. YOu are then handed a "grade" level of 2-8 for your next solo. You are only allowed to pick solos from those "grade" levels.
