Hi everyone,
New to the site. Was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm an experience clarinet player so i know it's not my playing and i'm getting higher notes in the register so it's not any of that.

It's just when i'm trying to play Bb in third octave i'm really struggling to get a decent sound on it and it just sounds really faint. It's almost hit and miss. Sometimes it's fine but 90% of the time it's really quite compared to the rest of my playing and it just sounds really wrong I don't know what the problem is.. I'm doing grade 8 very soon so I really need it sorting.

Has anyone else experience the same problem? And if so how did your resolve it?

Thank you

First off - what fingering are you using? Try the various options - is it just one or all of them? What is the Bb an octave lower like?

It is most likely to be a blocked or partially blocked tone hole. Whatever the cause is your teacher might be able to sort it out or your repairer deal with while you wait. It's much easier to give a diagnosis & cure with the instrument in front of you.

Good luck

It's only that one key in the third octave. I can't play in a lower one as it's songs i'm playing so can't play it any lower..Ahh okay i'll have a look it's possible i suppose..

Thank you

I wasn't suggesting putting that note down an octave when playing the piece.
However I wasn't thinking clearly - I should have asked what the Eb a 12th below sounds like (same fingering without the speaker key). Also which fingering are you using - LH 1&2 plus the side key, LH 1&2 plus LH3 on the trill key, or the 'long' LH1+RH1? This can help in diagnosis.
As I said in my previous post it will be much better to ask your teacher or go to a repairer to get it sorted.

It is the 'long' LH1+RH1 keys. Yes I will get my teacher to have a look at it i've got a lesson next week

I expect the Eb in the lower register doesn't work well either.
The link arm between the two joints has either lost its cork or got bent. This means the small vent hole just below LH1 doesn't fully close. As temporary cure wrap some selotape or similar round the arm on the upper joint so that this key closes. Don't use too much or the top pad on the lower joint won't close making life very difficult - many notes won't sound correctly.

Good luck.
