Audition pieces - too similar?    05:32 on Saturday, October 31, 2015

Hi there,

I am going to be auditioning for (Australian) universities within the next few months. At the moment, I have the following pieces under my belt, which I completed for my IB Diploma Music performance:

Debussy - Premiere Rhapsodie
Mozart - Clarinet Concerto mvt. 2
Bernstein - Clarinet Sonata, both movements
Messager - Solo De Concours (halfway there, have time to practice up to standard though)
Brahms - Clarinet Sonata 1 mvt. 1
Brahms - Clarinet Sonata 2 mvt. 1
Weber - Clarinet Concerto mvt. 1
Saint Saens - Clarinet Sonata mvt. 1, mvt. 2 and mvt. 4

The first audition is 15mins, and a second audition is 20mins. My two favourite pieces out of the above list are definitely the Debussy (I'll be doing that no matter what) and then either the Saint Saens 4th movement or Solo De Concours.

My question is, are these pieces too similar in style? They are all French, I know...... I'm hoping those more experienced than I can tell me I'm wrong and that they are totally fine to play in an audition, I suspect my worst fears will be realised though.

That said, supposing the Debussy will be there no matter what, what do you guys think the best combination otherwise is? I am also willing to learn any other piece, however I suspect there won't be many others that can be learnt in the space of about a month that equally show off similar skill to that of the Debussy.

Thanks!
Liam
