I am a new clarinet player, so please excuse my terminology. When I put my upper thumb on the bottom hole and at the same time press the key above it, should I be getting a 1 octave up? All I get is a squeaking sound. Thanks

You are actually getting a 12th. Splitting the octave would actually result in a tritone. So it would be incorrect to say an actave and a half.

Hello, im glad u are taking up the clarinet, its a wonderful instrument... im 15 in 9th grade and ive been playing since 5th and im first chair....
yes when u puch the long button on the back called the register key you go up to the next register, or whatever they said above. it takes alot of control and breath support to make the higher notes come out, ll beginners have trouble with it. when u first start to get it ur tone and intonation might be off, but keep working on long tones and transition from bottom octave up and ur tone will get better as u learn propper embashure and all that. if you want more info feel free to e-mail me CropCircleRadr07@yahoo.com or if u have aim my sn is CropCirleRadr07. i hope i helped a little bit
