What are chamber groups and how do I get in one?

Chamber music is music played in a small group/ensemble. It`s usually instrumental and has one player on a part (not always). Something like a clarinet choir is a chamber group.

If there is one in your area see if they are accepting members or make one of your own.

I regard the term `chamber` as anything possible to be performed without a conductor.

Local music schools and community conservatories usually have chamber music programs available if you cannot join/create one seperately.

I don`t know about that, Kevin. There are several symphony orchestras in the world that play without conductors but I wouldn`t call them chamber groups. Generally smaller than that.

Well, I guess you can call them chamber orchestras, not chamber groups. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra here in NY is a good example. A highly talented ensemble of pros that play without conductor.

The types of chamber groups that clarinets typically play in are clarinet trios, quartets, or choirs; woodwind quartet (clarinet, oboe, flute, bassoon/2 flutes 2 clarinets); woodwind quintets (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, frenchhorn),or woodwind trios (flute, clarinet, oboe) Of course there are also instruments that can substitute in for others, and there are other odd groups, but these are the most common.

If your school doesnt have a specific chamber program, then I think the best way would probably be just to get a few dedicated bad geeks togehter, organize a time to practice, and buy some sheet music. You could probably talk to your directors about being able to perform at school concert.

Hope this helps!
