Hi everyone, I need a solo to play this year at contest on the A clarinet. I`m looking for something dark and heavy, hopefully in a minor key (everything else I`ve ever played has been way too cheerful). Thanks for suggestions!

What level are you, roughly, Danny? The Schumann Fantasy Pieces and Romances are for A Clarinet and they are in places, particularly sombre - although some movements aren`t. If you go with a concerto, I`d go with the Hindemith is probably the best but again, it depends on how long you have to learn it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I`ll check some of them out. And the only reason it has to be in A... is because A clarinet is awesome. And I hate my Bb.

You could try stravinsky`s three pieces for solo clarinet. The first 2 are for A, and the third is for B flat clarinet.

okay so since you hate your Bflat clarinet have you ever considered playing Mozarts Concerto IN A for Clarinet, that is for the A clarinet they also have one for the Bflat as well(transposed, but a very FUN piece to play on the A clarinet lots of hard passages in the pieces, but you will enjoy it though a very great work of art by Mozart. That is a piece I would recommend from me. Good luck.
