Playing the clarinet is easy and a blast! It`s not like the flute where you have to learn how to get a sound out of it. You can come out of your first lesson knowing how to play a song. I would definately play it. You will have soooo much fun!!!

In my opinion- flute is easier......
Clarinet takes longer to get a good sound out, and if all you want to do is play little cheezy songs you learn in the first lesson then you have fun with that. If you want to learn real music and play something of actual significance then you`ll have to work on clarinet
TRUST ME THOUGH- it is well worth it

I`m with Bradley on this one. Clarinet is definately one of the harder instruments to take but THE most rewarding.
And Bradley`s right about the "cheezy" songs. There`s a pretty big gap between these songs and a Richard Stoltzman playing Rossini`s `Theme and Variations`. However, there`s practically no difference between a beginner flutist`s `Mary Had a Little Lamb` and a Eugenia Zukerman playing Mozart`s Flute Concertos.

Hi there,
Well I`m certainly no expert on either instrument but I can commnent on which I feel is the easier as a beginner as prior to taking up the clarinet I started to learn to play the flute.
No contest in my view - the flute was definitely easier for me !
I had no problem getting a reasonable sound out of the flute - the clarinet on the other hand is proving much more difficult.
I had to switch due to a problem with my left thumb - it`s numb due to medical accident a few years ago.
My thumb makes playing the clarinet in the higher registry interesting but I can manage it - I know where the key is now so have no real problem with it !

To tell all you beginners at the good ol` clarinet, it was pretty tough when I started. I`ve been playing it for 6 years already and I love it! It`s so much fun. Any of you heard Rhapsody and Blues by George Gershwin? That`s the main reason why I started and now I am able to play it due to the practices. AND IT RAWKS!!!
