hey, those trumpeters must be good... two of `em.. wow!! in our jazz band, they`re never loud enough!!! we got like 5, but most of them are pretty timid (well, timid enough for trumpet players!!!) i guess it depends what sorta stuff you play; whether its full out big band (loud, brassy stuff) or whether its more ballads and stuff.

my director had talked about having a jazz band, but only told a select few people. i was very upset because no clarinets were told about it. i decided to talk to him about it and he agreed to let us. my friend and i joined but she eventually quit. im so glad he let me join, though. i have improved because of that experience and plan to be in it untill i graduate.

My JR high let me in with a bass clarinet. I played the tenor 2 part but it was still REALLY high so I had to knock some of it down an octive. I learned the Tenor for jazz next year. It`s really easy if u already play clarinet cause the upper register is the same. U should try it.

Hey,
Im going to be a Freshman...at Myrtle Beach High next year...and no, our clarinet cant join jazz band...thats why I switched to alto sax...for jazz..band..next year...and hopefully I will fit well...it stinks that we couldnt but...having to start...alto..on top of clarinet...will open many doors..for me...`since alto next year has the lead part` aka `solos`
Thanks...all-state clarinet player for South Carolina

Well clarinet`s are no longer really necessary in jazz band (though I wish they were so I could play some solo. Instead I play the trombone in jazz band and clarinet in symphonic band). The phasing out of clarinets as main jazz solo instruments came with the rise of trumpet and sax soloist (e.g. Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, etc.) But if you get to play clarinet in jazz band consider yourself lucky. But if your lucky, your jazz band might just end up playing a piece that requires a clarinet. About 2 yrs ago at my school they had a flute soloist in two of the jazz band songs, in "El Tigre" and "Blues Machine" I think. So I think you should grab at the chance of playing the alto sax and just go with it. or if you band director would let you, I would go for the tenor saxophone because they`re in the same key and can read off of each other`s music.

in a modern day jazz band clarinets are not really needed but the type of music i play, u HAVE to have a clarinet for solos. i love playing old dixyland and swing stuff but our jazz band never really does. if any1 has ANY jazz band scores of anysorts (conductors scores) or websites i can get free jazz band sheet music that would be great.
and if u have any scores with clarinet (cuz i play it) plz scan it and email it to me. thankx all
p.s. and also i honasly think benny is the best. he may not have the wonderfull tone that artie shaw or the modern eddie daniels has but he has an incredable feel for swing and he could kick any1s @$$ in an improv solo or a solo for that matter. just listen to bennys version of moonglow and arties version. benny has such a better feel for swing. but i do also believe artie shaw is underrated as well and benny is a bit too overrated even tho he is my fav.

The high school that I go to does not have clarinets in the jazz/studio band. So this past summer, I took up the sax and flute so I could get into the jazz band. Just today, my band director asked me to try the alto clarinet because he needs it for a couple of songs we are going to play. Maybe one day I will get to play clarinet in the jazz band, but not today.

I`d love to join my school`s jazz band, but my director won`t let me until I learn how to play some saxophone. I`ve wanted to learn saxophone for quite some time now, but I can`t freakin` afford it!
Hell, I`d play trumpet too. But once again...$$$

This is so depressing. I play the clarinet at school and I would like to join jazz band but they don`t let clarinets play. I think I might have to play the baritone sax if I join.
