Plastics are cheaper in price then wood but wood has a more mellow sound then a plastic clarinet and is more pleasing to some people`s ears.

For a first clarinet, plastic is definately better, as it cheaper. Once you reach a certain standard (after about five years), you`ll need to switch to a decent wooden one. Which one you buy will depend hugely on your playing style and the sort of music you play, somehting you cannot know early on. On the plus side, that decent wooden clarinet will be good enough for any standard you play at, short of turning professional.
