I have been playing the basson for a while now and am interested in purchasing one. Could anyone please give me some suggestions of brands, styles,or what to look for.

What's your price range? How long have you been playing? What are your future plans for yourself and your bassoon? The answers to these questions will help us make better suggestions that fit your situation.

I have been playing for 1 year, and my price range is around 3,000-5,000. I am looking for something with all the keys to get me through highschool.

You can look for a used whatever in this price range and if you wait long enough you can get lucky. On the other hand, a new Fox model III is right in this ball park pricewise and may be one of the biggest bargains in bassoons right now...this is a Fox - not a Renard, so it is not considered a student instrument. It does happen to be plastic but you should go to the Fox web site and see their information about wood vs. plastic instruments.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Fox in any way, I just feel the Model III is a tremendous deal.

What is the best wooden model to get? (Overall)
Also, which is the best system to get? Heckel, german, etc.

The best wooden model to get is undoubtedly a Heckel. Of course there's a waiting list and a starting price of about $30,000.00.

Fox wooden professional models are very good and top out around 18-20,000. Many prefer Puchner, Moosman, or Polisi whose best models fall in similar price ranges.

If you aren't planning on playing in France, you're best off with a german (heckel) system. If you are going to be playing in college in any country other than France, your instructor is going to expect you to study the german system.

We've discussed this subject on many posts in the past. A good thing to do right now would be for you to look at old posts and see discussions on this. You may get some different insight or something might occur to you after reading all the other posts.

The fox(Renard) 220/240/222with HIghD key would probably suit you well, along with the Schrieber S16. New they fall at the top, or just a little more than your price range, however you can sometimes find good used deals from credible internet sites such as Midwest musical imports etc.

I've just bought a new bassoon. I've never heard of the brand before, but it's apparently made by Haydn. I'm just started to play the bassoon once again, so i'm not worried if it isn't professional quality, given i didn't pay much for it either, but i was wondering if anyone knew anything about Haydn made bassoons?

Hi Dreamer25,

I never heard about such a bassoon here in Germany. Nowadays there are some Chinese companies building all different kind of classical instruments. They are using a lot of different brand names. Perhaps your instrument is a Chinese one?
You know what is the best instrument for you???
It's yours, because you own it and can use it!!! ;-)
So, just take your bassoon and make great music.

Greetings from good old Germany, Martin

Hey, well, it turns out I didn't buy the 'Haydn' bassoon afterall. I read up a bit on these Chinese made bassoons, and apparently their reputation is pretty bad. Now I'm sifting through the auctions on eBay for hopefully a fox or something comparable.
