I think you're asking if the screw which holds the key extension from the E plate in the boot joint to the one in the wing joint might perhaps be tightened, loosened, or something in order to make the E plate close properly. Is that it? Answer: I don't think this will solve it. (I could be wrong, tho, because I'm not a woodwind mechanic). Ruth is right - wrap something around the extension to make it bigger so that the whisper key will close.

I doubt this particular problem is because of a screw - you've gotta be careful because some screws need to be looser than others otherwise stuff stops working properly. I'd leave the screws alone unless one is about to fall out, or obviously stopping something working properly. But just incase - you can get screwdrivers from any convenience or DIY store really, you don't need a special screwdriver, just one small enough to be able to use on your instrument.

What i suggest is - look at the pad on the crook key. follow the bar to the other end, where there should be a long rubber ring on the end of the bar. If you carry on following the links then you'll get to another bar with another rubber ring on the end. (the rubber is to stop the metal clinking together) get some paper and wrap it round the second of these rings a few times, you'll have to glue the paper down onto itself to stop it unravelling. It doesn't particularly matter if you put it on the first of the rings though.
Hope this helps.

If you want a nice set of really tiny screwdrivers, you can buy them on eBay under the category of "jewelry screwdrivers." I got a nice set of TINY TINY ones up to medium tiny size ones for under $10 U.S. including shipping. The set has its own little holder that fits nicely into my bassoon case.

Sounds like you definitely need to find a friendly local repairer who knows about bassoons - many won't touch bassoons - some will but shouldn't!! Ask any other bassoonists you know if they can recommend someone.
Look at www.namir.org.uk for any repairers near you.

Ian

What kind of noise is the G#/Ab making? Is it just leaking air? A common problem for a pad not sealing properly is that your bassoon needs re-corking. (this is just as it sounds, a bit of cork has worn down or fallen off so it doesn't close the pad as far) this is a really simple thing to fix, as long as you know how to get the various keys off, and have the glue and cork. But I'd take it to a repairer somewhere. When was the last time you had your bassoon serviced? It can be really expensive, but they should find all the leaky/sticky pads and replace them if need be.

The G# pad leaking is not due to a cork falling off - would expect the pad got old & hard or, more likely, the key has got knocked & needs realigning (It seems those G# keys are very easily bashed - they do stick up over the G key a bit)

Why wouldn't it be the cork? I've had loads of problems with air leaks because a bit of cork has fallen off...

I agree partially Ruth.

On some keys a cork falling off can cause leaks (The one that instantly comes to mind is if the cork between the ring key & F key on the butt disappears) - but on many others, including G# (either one), it won't. With G# the symptoms will be that the little finger key doesn't open the pad far enough (note can be stuffy & flat), the thumb opens it too far (a bit sharp & bright) & in both situations there is likely to be unwanted noise of bare metal hitting wood or metal.
