Fact #1) The oboe and the bassoon are equal in awesomeness.
Fact #2) The bassoon is awesome in low parts. Think not farting bedpost, but devil's smokestack.
Fact #3) The oboe can screech some really high parts. Think not long kazoo, but devil's pipe.
Fact #4) Both can achieve great passion/poignacy/emotion/thingy.
Fact #5) I play and like both. Which I play depends on my mood.

I also believe that the oboe and bassoon are of equal quality (awesomeness), but it's also a matter of preference. I would never play oboe, mostly due to the fact that the reeds are a little bit more expensive, and I think the key system would be too small for my hands. Bassoon is great for people with larger hands, but it also has a lot of keys to keep track of (not to mention that the key system is rather primitive on older models), and fingering all the notes is not always fun or easy. Both instruments are great in their own right, but I would personally go for bassoon.

Bassoons blend in with the other winds but dont do many solos
Oboes do not blend in, but do many solos

Oboe is lighter, and you can find more sheet music for it.

I thought oboe reeds were cheaper....

Can't you low Ab key like rot around it?

Uh.. yeah.

Bassoon is slightly rarer, and that can be a pro and a con. As a bassoonist, you will never want for a spot in an orchestra. However, no one knows what you play. I played at a children's concert the other day, and we had the kids come and learn about our instruments. I was playing bassoon, and a child's father asked me, "Is that a french horn or an oboe?" Everyone seems to think the bassoon is just a big oboe.

I have had numerous accounts of people asking me "what kind of oboe" my bassoon is. And sitting near the back of the orchestra doesn't help to popularize the bassoon either.

Yeah... I think I'll stick to the Oboe...

I'll drag my bro to the bassoon.
