I know everyone will jump on me and tell me not to do it, but I am going to march bassoon in Sydney in the ANZAC day parade.
It was very hard to find Marching Paraphenalia for Bassoon but I am finally using this

Plastic Reed (It sounds awful, but oh well)
Flute Lyre on my left arm
Neck Strap
Bass trombone music

Wish me luck and hope i don't impale myself with the crook

Wow! Umm... I've never really tried to march with my bassoon but I'm sure it would be pretty difficult. But I admire your enthusiasm. Good luck!

Just be sure its not illegal in your area. In some countries/states/provences it is illegal to march bassoon.

Oh my God-Illegal to march bassoon?

Well, ANZAC day was a huge success however it started raining and the bassoon has ceased to work-it was damaged to the point I couldn't disassemble it. Oh well, it was a rubbish thing and hopefully I'll get another one from school. hopefully.

I don't see why you couldn't march with bassoon. I've seen bari saxes march, and they're heavier I believe. There's just the problem of where to put the lyre, which you solved with a flutist friend. Personally, I march with the oboe, because I'd rather not march with a heavy instrument when I can play a lighter one just as well.

It's really dangerous to march with a bassoon - or for that matter an oboe - because should you someone knock your instrument that reed can go straight through the back of your throat. It's not that it's heavy, just that unlike with the clari and sax, your teeth don't stop the insturment if it's knocked. I would NEVER march with a bassoon.
As for the music, how can you see it when it's on your arm? I march with a piccolo and it's still hard enough to read.
I would also never march with my own instrument. because rain can damange instruments and cost a fortune to repair.

I marched the bassoon for my entire marching show my senior year of highschool. and I am hoping to in college as well, becasue I dont want to mess up my embouchure by playing any other reeded instrument.

Most oboe/bassoonists play cymbals or bass drum in a marching band instead of taking the risk.

I was wondering a few days ago if it was possible to march with a bassoon, but apparently it is. After reading everyone's posts, though, I have come to understand that it's very dangerous. Good luck, Plyrseag!!


Oh!! Is it really illegal in some places to march with a bassoon?? I can never tell when people are being sarcastic or not...

I think, do it maybe once for fun, and then heavily consider playing another instrument, because it is considerably hard to march bassoon and play the music properly. And after all that, I'm not sure you'd really be heard, and you mostly do it for yourself. But its a good once in a lifetime experience.

Just to clarify, i dont think you can mess up an embouchure. i play flute, clarinet, and sax, all w/ different embouchures, and i can play each one with ease.

But maybe bassoon is just really difficult, i havent tried it(yet).

In response to the injury by impalement, I have once heard about a girl who was playing it while on a bus and the bus hit the brakes, and you can pretty much guess what happened from there...
